Infrared Photography

Recurring Dream

Many of us love infrared (IR) photography, myself included.

Here is one of my shots using a Photoshop post-processing channel swap (red/blue). The softness was also later applied. But note how greens appear white - that is the magic of IR! Check the second image below.

The easiest way is to get yourself a Sony DSC-717 along with a Hoya R72 filter and one or two ND (neutral density) filters. I found that it worked well with a +4 ND. Use the Night Shot mode and fire away :) The advantage using the Sony is that you do it hand-held!

Another way is to check the lens compatibilty chart below. Some lenses just do not play well with the R72s and yield a big, fat, ugly ‘hotspot’ in the center of your image. To use a standard digital SLR with one of the lenses below still means long exposures (up to and exceeding 30 seconds), so a tripod is essential!

R72 passes only infrared rays above 720nm.
RM90 passes only that above 900n.

Dedicated IR Cameras - It is now possible to have a standard digital camera converted to infrared. The IR blocking glass piece is switched out for an infrared piece and you can shoot handheld! I now have a Rebel XT which is dedicated for IR work. The continuing task is to keep up with the lenses that are good or bad for IR.
