New PIXMA Line

Canon Australia today launched a new range of creative PIXMA printers featuring Internet and Wi-Fi-enabled models for complete print freedom anywhere in the home – or on the move.

“New ‘PIXMA Cloud Link’ and Wi-Fi access achieves complete print freedom for busy home office professionals and creative users, who move seamlessly between a range of devices and want their printer to fit in with their needs,” said Beryl Thomas, Brand Manager – PIXMA, Canon Australia. “Now you can print wirelessly in the home or via the Internet from virtually anywhere in the world to a ‘PIXMA Cloud Link’ enabled printer. You can also eliminate the need for a PC at all, accessing online content such as photos and documents direct from the printer.”

Seven models comprise the next generation of PIXMA, catering to a variety of needs at every price: the wireless multifunction PIXMA MG8250, MG6250, MG5350, MG4160 and MG3160; the compact MG2160 and the advanced single-function iP4950.

The question remains, have they fixed the "ink out" problem when the ink cartridge is still new!

DSLR Controller for Androids

Just for Canons right now, but coming soon for Nikons. LINK

Chainfire's DSLR Controller claims successful tests with the Canon EOS550D (aka Rebel T2i), EOS 50D, EOS 7D, EOS 5D Mark II, and EOS-1D Mark IV digital SLRs, using either the Samsung Galaxy S II phone, or one of three tablet models — the Acer Iconia A500, Motorola Xoom, and Toshiba Thrive.

Other Canon SLRs and Google Android tablets running Honeycomb (Android 3.0+) may also be compatible, but haven't been specifically tested. Devices running Gingerbread or earlier versions of Android aren't supported, as they lack USB host-mode drivers. This rules out support on all phones other than the Samsung Galaxy S II, but may allow tablets such as the Asus Eee Pad Transformer, Samsung Galaxy Tab, and future Honeycomb tablets from the likes of Lenovo to use the app.

Chainfire DSLR Controller allows a live view feed from compatible DSLRs, including tap-to-focus functionality, manual focus adjustment, live view zoom control, burst capture, bulb capture, and control over a wide range of exposure variables such as shutter speed, aperture, exposure compensation / bracketing, flash exposure compensation, ISO sensitivity, AF mode, white balance mode / color temperature, metering mode, auto lighting optimizer, drive mode, and picture style.

The app doesn't require root support, and can control cameras directly attached to the phone or tablet via USB, with no need for a separate computer to handle camera communications. While it has been released in beta form, there is a charge of US$8.56 in the Android Market, which nowadays allows users only 15 minutes to try an application before disallowing refunds. Chainfire notes that once the program reaches a v1.0 stable release, the price will likely be increased further, but existing users should receive this upgrade without charge.

Panasonic Lumix CF3

Panasoniuc Lumix GF3

Another contender in the race to produce the world's smallest, lightest interchangeable-lens camera, Panasonic's Lumix DMC-GF3.

It's certainly one of the most pocket-friendly lens-swapping cameras so far, but at £500 with a 14-42mm lens, it's a bit pricey. US prices are a bit better (see below).

The 12-megapixel GF3 comes in a rounded aluminum chassis, with a 3-inch touchscreen and built-in pop-up flash. One cool feature is that you can focus and take a picture by tapping on the screen.

Mini DSLR fron Sony

Sony Alpha NEX-C3

Photographers know that top-of-the-line cameras are SLRs, regular or digital. Having multiple lenses allows for greater control over depth-of-field, exposures and shutter speeds.

Compact cameras are trying to get as close as they can to the strengths of SLRs without all the weight and bulk.

Note the Sony Alpha NEX-C3. Weighing in at 225g, it comes with a 18-55mm kit lens, which adds to the weight and bulk. The lens is about the same size as ones for DSLRs.

Also available with a 16mm Wide Angle. Check the offers below.

Reports say it takes close to mid range shots, and decent macros. It seems to shine in high ISO shots and low-light video with the touted Exmore sensor.

The end result is a camera that delivers photos with crisp detail and vibrant colors regardless of the lighting conditions.

For beginners, the NEX-C3 has a Photo Creativity setting that simplifies aperture, exposure and white balance settings. This helps amateurs to snap great looking photos, and acts as a learning tool for creative types who want to experiment with their shots.

Ron Garan space tweets

Astronaut Ron Garan, known on Twitter as @Astro_Ron, has been sharing his unique view with tens of thousands of space fans.

In 2009, NASA placed an order for 11 D3S digital SLR cameras with F-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED lenses to be used for photographic documentation in space, according to Nikon. NASA has reportedly used Nikon equipment since the early 1970s, and, to date, has taken more than 700,000 photographs using Nikon equipment.

Sub-$1000 DSLRs

Canons

Can it be only 20 years ago that the first DSLR was introduced?

Yes. It was the Kodak DCS-100, with a jury-rigged 1.3-megapixel camera back attached to a Nikon F3 film SLR, and a shoebox-sized 200 MB hard drive that slung painfully over your shoulder. And it cost you $26,000 !

By today's standards, the DCS-100 was a dinosaur—but some say the same of any DSLR that's more than five years old, as tech advances come so quickly.

Now, if you're a serious photographer who can't justify spending several grand on a rugged, full-frame DSLR, or even a pro looking for an affordable, lightweight backup camera and one that just happens to record great video, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the features and performance found in DSLRs costing under $1,000.
